Stainless Steel Drinkware Materials: A B2B Buyer Checklist

Stainless Steel Drinkware Materials: A B2B Buyer Checklist

Specify the material at component level

“Stainless steel” alone is not a complete purchase specification. Record which parts contact the beverage, the requested grade for each part, the intended drink and cleaning conditions, and the market where the product will be sold. A bottle may also include coatings, lids, seals, straws or other parts that need their own review.

Questions to put in the RFQ

  • Which stainless grade is specified for the inner vessel and any other relevant metal parts?
  • What material or lot records can the supplier provide for the approved product configuration?
  • Which other components contact the beverage, and what are their material specifications?
  • What cleaning, temperature and use conditions should the selected construction meet?
  • Which destination-market documents or tests does the buyer require, and what sample or component do they cover?

Choosing between SUS304 and SUS316

Type 316 contains molybdenum. A World Stainless design guide describes a typical range of 2–3% and explains its relative advantage against chloride-related pitting in relevant environments. The result depends on the chemical, concentration, temperature, surface condition and exposure time. Compare the grades against the actual use case and supplier documentation.

Read the SUS304 vs SUS316 drinkware buyer guide for a focused comparison. The material grade does not by itself establish food-contact compliance for a finished bottle. ASTM A240 covers specified stainless-steel plate, sheet and strip; it is not a blanket approval of finished drinkware. See the ASTM A240/A240M scope and the World Stainless design guidelines.

Keep the approved sample tied to its records

Save the sample version, component list, material documents and agreed checks together. If a grade, lid, coating or other part changes, ask the supplier which records and approvals need to be updated. Use the B2B drinkware RFQ checklist to organize the project details.
